How to fix a KDP interior PDF that's the wrong size

One of the most common KDP upload errors is a page size that doesn't match the trim size you chose, often because the book was written in Word on US Letter or A4 pages. The KDP Fixer resizes the PDF to the trim size so it uploads.

Step by step

  1. Open the File Editor. Choose KDP Fixer.
  2. Choose Interior PDF and your trim size. 6×9, 5×8, 5.5×8.5, 7×10 or 8.5×8.5 inches.
  3. Upload your interior PDF. The file KDP rejected.
  4. Download and re-upload to KDP. Then check every page in KDP's previewer.

Fixing a cover too

Switch the KDP Fixer to Cover image to fit a cover to KDP's size. Enter your page count and paper (white or cream), since those set the spine width, and tick the box if the image is already a full wrap.

Starting fresh is often better

Shrinking a Letter-size page down to 6×9 makes the text smaller. If you have the manuscript, formatting it from scratch at the right size in the free Book Formatter gives a more professional result.

Other common KDP errors

Margins too small: text sits in KDP's no-go zone near the edge. Reformatting with larger margins is the real fix. Fonts not embedded: export the PDF again from your word processor with fonts embedded, or format it in the Book Formatter, which handles this for you. Page count doesn't match the cover: if you change the interior, resize the cover's spine to the new page count.

Questions

Is it free?

The KDP Fixer is part of Postscript Pro: $24.99 once, no subscription.

What's the most common trim size?

6 × 9 inches.

Why does page count matter for covers?

The spine gets wider as the page count goes up, so the full cover changes size.

Will resizing make my text smaller?

If the PDF shrinks from Letter or A4 to a smaller trim size, yes. It's usually still readable, but reformatting at the right size looks better.
