How to remove a plain background from a photo (no AI)

Product photos, profile pictures and stickers look much more professional on a clean or transparent background. Postscript's cut-out tool removes plain backgrounds and lets you erase anything else by hand. It doesn't use AI: you stay in control of exactly what's removed.

Step by step

  1. Open the Photo Editor. Upload your photo.
  2. Click Remove background. It removes the plain background around your subject automatically.
  3. Tidy up. Use Magic remove for leftover patches, and the Erase and Restore brushes for fine edges. Adjust the tolerance if too much or too little is removed.
  4. Export as PNG. PNG keeps the transparent background.

Shoot for an easy cut-out

Automatic removal works best when the background is one plain colour that's very different from your subject: a white wall behind a dark product, or a sheet of coloured card. Busy backgrounds need more hand-tidying.

Putting your cut-out to use

Once the background is gone, download a transparent PNG and drop it onto a new background: a plain colour for a product listing, a branded template for a social post, or a book cover design. Product shots on a clean white background are what most online marketplaces expect.
