How to convert a PDF to EPUB for Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo

PDFs have fixed pages, so on a phone or e-reader you end up pinching and zooming. An EPUB reflows the text to fit any screen and lets the reader change the font size. Postscript's document converter turns PDFs and other documents into EPUB, with a title and author set for you.

Step by step

  1. Open the File Editor. Choose Convert document.
  2. Upload your document. PDF, Word (.docx), EPUB, TXT, Markdown or HTML.
  3. Choose EPUB. Add the title and author so the ebook shows up properly in your library.
  4. Download and send to your reader. Use Send to Kindle, add it to Apple Books, or copy it to your Kobo.

What converts well

Text-based PDFs, such as ones exported from Word or Google Docs, convert best. Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages, so there's no text inside for the converter to pull out.

Writing your own book?

If you're starting from your own manuscript rather than an existing PDF, use the Book Formatter instead. It builds the EPUB from your text with proper chapters, a title page and a table of contents, and it's free.

Other ways to do it

Calibre, a free desktop ebook manager, can convert PDFs to EPUB with plenty of settings if you're happy to install software. Amazon's Send to Kindle also accepts PDFs directly, but keeps them as fixed pages. Postscript is the quick option when you want a reflowable EPUB from a browser.

Tidy up afterwards

PDFs often have page numbers and running headers on every page, and these can end up in the middle of the ebook text. Skim the result and, if it's your own book, consider rebuilding it from the original manuscript in the Book Formatter instead.
