How to convert audio to MP3, or pull the audio out of a video

Voice memos, podcast recordings and screen recordings come in all sorts of formats. MP3 plays everywhere, and WAV is what most editing software prefers. You can also pull just the audio out of a video file.

Step by step

  1. Open the File Editor. Choose Convert audio.
  2. Upload the file. Audio (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC) or video (MP4, MOV, WebM).
  3. Choose MP3 or WAV. For MP3, pick a quality from 96 to 320 kbps. 192 kbps is a good default.
  4. Download. Save the new audio file.

Which bitrate should you pick?

96 to 128 kbps is fine for speech, like voice notes and talks. 192 kbps suits most music. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality. Pick WAV if you're going to edit the audio further, since it doesn't compress the sound.

Common uses

Turning a recorded talk or lecture into an MP3 to listen to on the go, saving a voice memo in a format your editor accepts, pulling the music from your own video, or shrinking a large WAV recording to send by email. Only convert audio you own or have permission to use.
