How to make a favicon (.ico) from any image

A favicon is the little icon in a browser tab next to your site's name. Most website builders accept a PNG, but some platforms and older browsers still want a proper .ico file.

Step by step

  1. Start with a square image. A simple, bold logo or a single letter works best, since it'll be shown very small.
  2. Open the File Editor. Choose the HEIC · SVG · ICO · BMP task and upload your image.
  3. Choose ICO. Pick ICO as the output and choose the size.
  4. Download and upload to your site. Add the file in your website builder's site icon or favicon setting.

Design tips for tiny icons

Fine detail and small text disappear at 16 px. Use one shape or letter, strong contrast, and as little empty border as possible. Test it by looking at it from across the room: if you can still tell what it is, it'll work in a browser tab.

Adding it to your website

Most website builders (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Shopify) have a site icon or favicon setting where you upload the file. If you edit your site's HTML yourself, put the .ico file in your site's root folder; browsers look for /favicon.ico automatically. Your browser may keep showing the old icon for a while, so check in a private window.

Questions

What size should a favicon be?

Make it from an image at least 256 × 256 px. Browsers scale it down as needed.

Is it free?

Yes, with no watermark.

Can I use an SVG logo?

Yes. Upload the SVG and convert it to ICO or PNG.

PNG or ICO?

Modern browsers handle PNG favicons fine. ICO is the safest choice if you want it to work everywhere, including older browsers.
